Inside the Engineering of the OKAPA Luxury Water Bottle: Our Dezeen Collaboration Revealed
4 minute read
Swiss precision meets medical-grade materials in a luxury hydration system eight years in the making, now revealed in an exclusive Dezeen feature — The OKAPA luxury water bottle
The water bottle market has been defined by compromise: cheap materials, short lifespans, and hygiene treated as an afterthought. The OKAPA water bottle was created as the antidote to that utilitarian standard.
We are proud to share that OKAPA has been featured by Dezeen, one of the world’s leading voices in architecture and design publication, in an exclusive film that takes the viewer behind the engineering of our luxury water bottle. This moment represents more than eight years of development, over 10,000 prototypes, and an uncompromising pursuit of precision led by founder Hardy Steinmann.
Medical-Grade Materials, Zero Compromise
The OKAPA water bottle is built on a principle rarely applied to everyday objects: material integrity without concession.
The interior carafe is formed from German-manufactured borosilicate 3.3 glass, the same standard trusted in laboratories and medical environments worldwide. It is chemically inert, non-porous, odorless, and resistant to thermal shock, ensuring absolute purity in contact with water.
Mechanical components are engineered from Nitronic 60 stainless steel, sintered and precision-finished —a corrosion-resistant alloy trusted in surgical and aerospace applications where failure is not tolerated. The cap and spout are produced from Grilamid TR-90, a Swiss-engineered, FDA and EU approved medical-grade polymer, selected for its chemical stability, resilience, and long-term structural integrity.
Every material in the OKAPA bottle is chosen not for appearance alone, but for its ability to perform under the highest standards of hygiene, durability, and longevity.
Engineering with Intention
The OKAPA water bottle is protected by more than 70 global patents, a reflection of engineering depth rarely seen in this category.
The anodized aluminum shell, defined by precision-machined perforations, protects the glass structure while allowing controlled airflow to maintain a dry, hygienic interior. A silicone shock-absorption system guards against impacts, while four engineered safety seals ensure absolute containment. The entire system disassembles completely for deep cleaning; no hidden corners, eliminating compromise. Engineered to withstand extreme thermal shock, OKAPA performs without deviation, built not for convenience, but for permanence.
“I wanted to create something different —a bottle with the ethics of a medical instrument built around hygiene, yet shaped with the emotion of sculpture.”
— Hardy Steinmann, Founder & CEO, OKAPA
Sculpture Meets Function
Every detail, from the precisely measured perforations to the spring-loaded titanium detent pin within the hinge is intentional, controlled, and resolved. Nothing is decorative. Everything performs.
Available in eight distinct colorways, the OKAPA bottle is designed to feel personal while remaining fundamentally uncompromising. Its presence at New York Fashion Week, in collaboration with Mila Sullivan (2025) and AKNVAS (2026), reinforces its position as an object of design culture, not merely utility.
OKAPA exists at the intersection of engineering discipline and emotional design.
Built to Last, Built to Recycle
The OKAPA water bottle is not designed for replacement.
Every component is fully recyclable, not as a statement, but as a direct consequence of material selection and engineering integrity. Built to outlast cycles of use, trends, and time itself, every premium reusable water bottle that endures eliminates the need for another. Its sustainability lies in its permanence.
Why Dezeen, and What’s Next
With over 4 million monthly readers across architecture, interiors, and product design, Dezeen is a natural platform for a luxury water bottle that operates at the intersection of industrial design, material science, and luxury craftsmanship. The exclusive film reveals the journey of each component from raw material to final assembly, exposing the engineering typically concealed beneath the surface.
This is only the beginning. OKAPA will extend into new objects built on the same principles: medical-grade materials, precision engineering, and uncompromising design.
Experience OKAPA
OKAPA is not for everyone.
It is for those who reject compromise, and who believe the objects in their life should be engineered to the highest possible standard. We invite you to experience the difference.
